Artist Bio. & Resume
Donald Localio was born in Princeton, New Jersey. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1978 from the University of Houston, and then his Masters of Fine Arts in 1980 from the Maryland Institute of Art. Localio has exhibited widely, and his work has been included in shows alongside works by Robert Motherwell, Stanley Boxer, Kenneth Noland, and Ellsworth Kelly.
Localio has been undeniably influenced by the abstract expressionists Arshile Gorky, Mark Rothko, and Willem De Kooning. In fact, de Kooning singled out Localio's work in Houston in 1980, invited him to visit his studio in East Hampton, and obtained a painting for his personal collection. However, while Localio's gesture is related to abstract expressionism, his imagery and use of color are very contemporary, and his language is highly personal.
Don Localio & Willem De Kooning
The recent works from his latest solo exhibition, “Cirque, Collective Works of Don Localio” materialized over the last few years while Localio has been working & living in Charleston, SC. Still applicable however are earlier reviews:
-Joe R. Arredondo, Jr. , Texas A&M University
"Donald Localio looks very much the Abstact Expressionist. Yet, the sketches he makes for some paintings rule out a strictly automatist Inspiration, and at times he seems closer to Kandinsky than the later American masters. ...but he appears also to compose consciously, favoring an oval or elliptical shape integrated into a field that is generally of contrasting color.
...In short, it's as if the artist hears his paintings as a composer would his music, and indeed it's not difficult for the viewer mentally to translate the shapes into the sounds of different instruments..."
-Vivian Raynor, New York Times
Currently on view in Charleston, SC, Abstract expressionist Don Localio presents an exhibit of some of his more controversial works, mainly focusing on his topless can-can dancers. The opening reception was held at Torch Velvet Lounge, and included live can-can girls, as well as an array of French music, and a performance by Bizarro Burlesque.

When you reach the heart of life you shall find beauty in all things, even in the eyes that are blind to beauty.
